Well done to Stu Moore for being the winning Byte in the Weston Grand Slam on 18-20 April, which was attended by 6 Bytes. Bytes were the biggest single fleet. Winds were mostly light and shifty but Stu was consistently fast. He was however closely challenged by Maggie Futcher in particular, who made excellent use of shifts on some of the beats and had good downwind speed.

Following a request at the Dinghy Show I have arranged for some further training to take place on 17 August at Calshot SC. It will add to the other training earlier in the season, being at a sea venue and in the same area as the Nationals the following weekend. Following onshore training, boat tuning and tips helms can join in the club pursuit race in the afternoon. Boats can be left at Calshot SC until the Nationals and helms can also join club racing on the evenings of 18 & 19 August. Further details will be announced nearer the date.

I have arranged for two formal training opportunities at minimal cost. I am very grateful to Gordon Tweedle and Louis Saunders for making these arrangements at their clubs:

31 May (day) - Haversham SC - details to follow, but cost will be no more than £10.
19 July (morning) - Combs SC - followed by open meeting racing, with cost included in open fees.

There are also informal training opportunities available via attending any of our open and Championship events, where experienced helms will gladly provide helpful tips and advice. For example our first 2014 event, the Weston Grand Slam, is run over 3 days from 18 - 20 April and should provide lots of early season practice.

All the best

There is excellent news at last. I am delighted to let you know that Hartley Boats are the new builders of Bytes in the UK. They will also be supplying other Northern European countries, and are very optimistic about the future success of the class. Hartley Boats are based in Derby, quite local to me, Rick and Louis.

Hartley Boats are a fast-growing company with an established range of dinghies. The Byte fits well within their range. This represents the start of a whole new era for the class.

Bytes in C11 and standard/training mode will be on the Hartley Boats stand at the Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace on 1 & 2 March. Please pop along to take a look, to meet the Hartley folk and to chat to class representatives.

There will be special offers on the first few C11s which Hartley Boats make - just £2995 - £2,000 saving on planned retail price. What an opportunity!

Please see the events page for details of our 2014 events. The National Championships will again be part of SailFest. The organisers have however switched SailFest from WPNSA to Calshot Activity Centre. This is close to a good number of Byte helms in the Solent, so I hope that our entry level will be maintained.

I am still looking to organise some early season training, and further details of this will follow. - Eddie Pope
