Dear Byte sailor,

I hope this newsletter finds you well and looking forward to the season ahead.  Apologies for the delay since the last update, life and work still have an unpleasant habit of getting in the way of sailing… one day….

That said, the delay coincides with 2 good bits of news and hence I’m excited to bring you this newsletter; firstly, Mumbles Yacht Cub are now accepting entries for this years National Championship and secondly, Hartley Boats have offered an extremely generous offer to tempt you into entering early!  Full details below.
This edition also provides a reminder about the Class Association membership and further details on our Travellers Series for 2019.

For those of you able to sail through the winter months, it has been quite a challenge over the last few weeks.  At my home Club, Bowmoor, we have only managed one Sunday race from 8 scheduled races over the last 4-weeks.  Quite simply, it has been ‘Goldilocks ‘sailing, either too little wind or too much wind, so here’s hoping for just the right amount for the next 4-weeks.  For those of you that like a thrill, take a look here at Zoe sailing in 45mph winds last weekend.  Racing was cancelled but the young and brave ventured out for the rush – just look at how much the CII mast can bend!  Not for the feint hearted or those of a nervous disposition!

Finally, we are just 2-weeks away from the first open event of the season – Bowmoor on Saturday 30th March!  I know it is still early season, but I’ve ordered the fine weather (honest…), visitors are welcome to camp over on either the Friday or Saturday night (or both if keen) and the Club is ‘fairly’ central in the country (Cotswolds).  For those of you that have not visited Bowmoor, the sailing and admin is easy (great clubhouse, plenty of parking, easy beach launch, space for camping or campers vans).  The notice of race is here and keep an eye on the Class Association Facebook page for updates.  Entry is £10 and the galley will be open for another top-quality lunch.

UK Byte Class Association National Championships – Mumbles Yacht Club 18th-21st July 2019

As introduced in my last newsletter, after 3 fabulous years at Weymouth, we have decided to change venues for 2019 and we are heading to a beautiful area in South Wales area known as the Mumbles, near Swansea.  The Yacht Club is located at the South Western end of the bay and they have very generously offered to play host venue to our National Championship.

Entry is now open via the Mumbles YC website and the link is here.

SPECIAL OFFER – Enter before Friday 26th April 2019 and you will go into a draw to win a brand-new Byte sail (your choice to have either a CI or CII).  Hartley Boats are giving us, not one, but two sails, so you have 2 chances to win…  The draw will take place before the event and the sail will be ready for you when you arrive!  You do need to be a member of the Class Association to be eligible.

This is an amazing offer, so for the cost of entry, you will have a great chance (actually, two chances) to win a sail that retails at £800!  Thank you so much to Mark and Richard Hartley.

Location: Mumbles Yacht Club, Swansea

Thursday 18th July – Registration and optional afternoon coaching session
Friday 19th July – Registration and Day 1 – late start and 2 afternoon races.
    Saturday 20th July – Day 2 – 3 races, evening social.
    Sunday 21st July – Day 3 – 2 final races followed by prize-giving.

Cost: £75 per sailor

Prizes: Funded by Class Association and sponsorship

Accommodation: Details to follow.  Options for camper vans.
Last year we achieved a record 35 boats on the start line.  In 2019, we are aiming for a fleet of 50.  If there is sufficient demand, we will run a separate novice start to begin after the main fleet.  Bottom line, there is no excuse not to enter this one…

Class Association Membership

Emma Pearson, our current National Champion and new membership secretary has recently emailed out to remind members that membership renewals are due.

The Byte Class Association membership fees are due on the 1st April annually. Our preferred method of communication is email but please note any change of details on the Membership Form so we may keep our records up to date.  If you have not received your renewal letter, please email Emma at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Remember, you will need to be a member to enter Class Association events and to be eligible for the prize draw for the new sail.

Byte Traveller Series

In addition to the National Championship, our largest annual event, we aim to provide a traveller series comprising a number of Open events during the core season (March to October) to get members together for fleet racing.  The Byte CI and CII can be very competitive in handicap racing, but let’s be honest, there is nothing quite like the boat-on-boat racing available in fleet racing.

We are currently looking to confirm the following events and further details will follow:

30th March – Bowmoor Sailing Club – season opener
    4th- 5th May – Weston Sailing Club
8th- 9th June – Mumbles YC – a chance to practice at the Nationals venue!
    13th – 14th July – Castle Cove (Weymouth Dinghy Regatta) – TBC
    18th – 21st July – Mumbles YC – National Championships
    7th – 8th September – Combs SC
    28th – 29th September – Bowmoor SC (Inland Championships)

Two of these events (Castle Cove and Mumbles 8/9 Jun) coincide with wider Open events so other members of your family can join you to sail their boat.  It may also be possible at Weston and we will update on this shortly.  We tried hard to find a second venue further north in the country, but we have been defeated this year by multiple clashes in diaries.  We will look ahead to next year to see if we can better balance the travelling demands for all sailors.

Very happy to receive feedback and indeed volunteers to help organise future events.
