Happy New Year!

You are receiving this newsletter because you are a member of the Byte Class Association or you have indicated to me that you are interested in Byte events.  If you do not wish to receive future editions, please use the unsubscribe option at the foot of this newsletter or simply reply to me and I will remove you from our database.  Better still, read on and let me know what you think… and, please pass-on to anyone you know who might be interested!

With Christmas now firmly in the ‘rear view mirror’, my sights are turning to the sailing year ahead and I wanted to take an early opportunity to let you know what we have in store for 2019 and specifically to start ‘the ball rolling’ for our National Championships.

I also hope to update you on membership, our Committee and what we hope to achieve in 2019!  January is a great time of year to reflect on the last 12-months and plan for the months ahead – set yourself a goal, a challenge, perhaps even some targets for your sailing?  What better target than…
UK Byte Class Association National Championships – Mumbles Yacht Club 18th-21st July 2019
After 3 fabulous years at Weymouth, we have decided to change venues for 2019 and we are heading to a beautiful area in South Wales area known as the Mumbles, near Swansea.  The Yacht Club is located at the South-West end of the bay in a stunning location and they have very generously offered to play host venue to our National Championship.

National Championship.

They will excite many of you and particularly those that have competed before, but I’m also very conscious that they are daunting for new members to the fleet who perhaps have not ventured far from your home Clubs (yet…).  From experience of the last 3 events, the simple beauty of the Byte fleet is that it provides high quality, stimulating sailing for everyone in the fleet and we will do our absolute utmost to encourage, support and challenge you all.

If you are a new member to the fleet and feel daunted by the prospect of travelling, competing or even sailing on the sea, please let me know and I’ll do my best to advise, support and generally cajole you towards the start line…

Last year we achieved 35 boats on the start line.  In 2019, we are aiming for a fleet of 50.  Richard Hartley from Hartley Boats is once again very generously supporting the event and he very much hopes to join us at some point to meet everyone.

Look out below for an exceptional offer from Hartley Boats to exchange your current boat!  Richard is super keen to support current fleet members and generate more second-hand boats to expand the fleet.  This has worked exceptionally well for the Supernova fleet also manufactured by Hartley’s.

Finally, the National Championships is in 194 days – so, a great objective, and a goal for all of you to attend and do the best that you can do – let’s make this the best Byte year ever and your best year in sailing!

Your Class Association

The UK Byte Class Association is run by volunteers for the purposes of promoting sailing in the Byte dinghy.  Specifically, the Class Association works with the manufacturer (Hartley Boats) to engage with the International Class Association to ensure that our boats are at the highest possible quality and that we keep pace with developments in the Class from around the World.  The Class Association also organises the UK National Championship and the Annual Travellers series.

The Committee currently comprises the following volunteer members:

Chairman – John Banbrook
Treasurer – Jacqui Thomas (newly appointed)
Membership Secretary – Emma Pearson (newly appointed and our 2018 National Champ)
Events Secretary – Sian Nunn (newly appointed)

Our current website is here.  We are working on a new website which will provide a much simpler format but easier to update and maintain.  Details will be advised in a newsletter shortly.

Because the Committee is filled by volunteers who all have jobs and busy lives, it can sometimes take a little while to respond to your questions and queries.  We are in the process of making some changes for 2019 and we hope to improve our communication.  We are always on the look for new keen volunteers, so please don’t be shy if you want to get involved….
Byte Traveller Series
In addition to the National Championship, our largest annual event, we aim to provide a traveller series comprising a number of Open events during the core season (March to October) to get members together for fleet racing.  The Byte CI and CII can be very competitive in handicap racing, but let’s be honest, there is nothing quite like the boat-on-boat racing available in fleet racing.

In recent years, attendance has varied and so I’m keen to hear from you to learn what would encourage you to travel.  There are many opportunities to join open handicap events all across the country and most good Clubs have an active racing programme; I would like to compliment this with 6 (+ or – one or two) high quality travelling events for the Byte fleet.  Please let me know what it is that would encourage you to attend – and your favourite venues.

We are currently considering the following events:

23rd March – Bowmoor Sailing Club – season opener
Possible Easter event on South Coast (Weston)
22nd-23rd June Open event at Mumbles YC – opportunity to practice at Nationals venue
13th-14th July – Castle Cove SC - Weymouth Dinghy Regatta – chance for 2-days sea sailing before Nationals
18th-21st July – Mumbles YC – National Championships
17th-18th July – Weston SC - Weston Open for Single Handers
    September TBC – Combs SC
29th-29th September – Byte Inlands – Bowmoor SC

We are looking at other options to get another venue ‘up North’, perhaps Carsington and open to suggestions.  Please, please let us know what you think and advise on options if you know of good venues that might be prepared to host us.

Hartley Boats Offer

Hartley Boats have got a new ‘sparkly’ website and as mentioned above, Richard remains extremely enthusiastic about our little boat.  They are currently offering an exceptional deal on part exchange for a new boat.  Richard is looking to stimulate the availability of second-hand boats and if you are thinking of upgrading, this is an opportunity too good to miss.  You can view the offer here
